Hey all!

Pretty excited to be moving to Sonora CA in September!!  I have backpacked a bit in the Emigrant Wilderness, but dont know a whole lot else about the area.  I know there is SO much more in the area to do and see.  Seems like there is a lot off hwy 4, 108 and 120.  I know there is the Emigrant Wilderness and the Carson-Iceberg and the whole Stanislaus  National Forest to explore.  I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on books for ideas on good places to backpack, car camp, disperse camp, hike, swimming holes in that area…all the good stuff?

THANKS!

Jeffrey Schaffer has written a book on each of the wilderness areas between SR 4 and SR 108. There is also an out of print book on the Tahoe tonYosemite Trail that you can read on Google Books. The rangers and volunteer staff in the Stanislaus National Forest offices are a wealth of information. I envy you. Leavitt Peak is a fun hike from Deadman Lake or Leavitt Lake with some Class 2 walking.

You can also check out our website:  backpackthesierra.com

We’re based in Napa, but have a cabin near Twain Harte, and have done a lot of hiking in the area…
