Ooops!
Snoop Dogg’s ‘giving up smoke’ marketing stunt with smokeless firepit company Solo Brands didn’t increase sales as intended, and it ended up costing the company’s CEO his job.
The ad, which included the rapper posting a vague message on Instagram to tell followers he’s ‘giving up smoke,’ went viral in November, leaving fans scratching their heads, wondering whether the weed icon was actually going to quit smoking cannabis. Unfortunately, the stunt didn’t bring in the money Solo Brands was hoping for, resulting in the ouster of company CEO, president, and director of the board John Merris.
Solo Brands had to adjust its financial expectations for fiscal year 2023, predicting lower revenue. The company’s interim CFO Andrea Tarbox said in the press release, ‘While our unique marketing campaigns raised brand awareness of Solo Stove to an expanded and new audience of consumers, it did not lead to the sales lift that we had planned.’
Former Vista Outdoor CEO Christopher Metz has been announced as Solo Brands’ new president, CEO, and director of the board, effective as of January 15.
