SMD Deschutes Plus vs. Hexamid Solo Plus

Looking for something ultralight and enclosed and I find myself increasingly looking at the two.  I have little love for cuben (especially the price) and I actually find silnylon pitches a little easier because of the stretch.

Specs appear pretty darn close in most areas except width.

Deschutes ends: 43″   vs.  Hexamid Solo-Plus ends: 42″

Deschutes middle:  80″ vs.  Hexamid middle: 62″

Deschutes length:  105″  vs. Hexamid length: 108″

Deschutes height: 48″  vs. Hexamid height 51″

Weights are close enough for me.  I realize the Deschutes isn’t a fully closed floor, but that seems easily remedied with a cut-to-fit diy tyvek bathtub, the same as I’d use in a Hexamid. (Basically patterned off the Z-Packs solo bathtub)

I realize that a few extra inches in height can translate to steeper walls and more interior space, but I can’t imagine it’s that drastic when these shelters are within a few inches of each other.

So is the Deschutes Plus the poorman’s Hexamid Solo-Plus?

The Deschutes at 48″ sits quite low to the ground around the edge.  I usually set mine at 50″ and have had little trouble with rain blowing in. I do the same higher pitch with my Lunar Solo as well. I don’t think of either as the poor man’s tarp or tent!  The wider width at the middle is a real plus as it makes a great area for gear storage.

Thanks bjc, good to know.  Not at all trying to disparage SMD with the poorman comment, that’s in reference to my own funds!  $445 for a Hexamid Solo Plus is a hard pill to swallow vs. $175 for the Deschutes Plus from AntiGravityGear, including 6 Ti stakes and a tyvek groundsheet.

I’ve been using a Deschutes for a few trips now and like it. The big drawback on the Plus for me is the lack of bug protection when the door is open. I don’t usually like to sleep with the door closed but I do want bug protection frequently. I’ve chosen to use a bivy inside my (standard) Deschutes for now and might pick up a Serenity bug net one of these days for the right trip…
