Sleeping bag for Arizona in October

I’m thinking about an October trip next fall to Arizona. For backpacking the Grand Canyon, we would need only lighter weight sleeping gear. But for camping elsewhere, especially at higher elevations, we’d want warmer gear. We will spend a couple weeks and visit other places, not sure where just yet.

Does it make sense to bring two different bags? We would only carry one into the canyon, leaving the warmer gear in the car. Or just take the warmer bags and sleep on top? My warmest bag is probably way too warm for Grand Canyon.

I’ve never gone into the canyon, just seen it from the rim when I was about 10. That was a while ago… We will probably stick to the more well used trails, and just take our time. Relaxing is the goal, not an Uber challenge. Maybe base camp and day hike some side trails. Slowest known time or something like that. I’m open to any specific itinerary suggestions too.

I will have two kids in college, so a stay at Phantom Ranch is out! Camping and ramen noodles are the affordable way to travel for the next few years!

It’s warmer on the bottom. The north rim is much cooler than the south rim.  I slept fine with a 30 degree bag on the north rim in October. That would be plenty warm on the bottom.

Where else are you planning to go?  A 20 degree quilt with the right sleeping pad might be your best option.

If camping and sleeping at the bottom, say Bright Angel (next to Phantom Ranch), don’t forget there can be humidity as a creek runs next to the campground.
