I recently acquired a roll of olive green ripstop with a silver coating on one side from a local business that had shut down. The label on the fabric listed the original seller but it’s such old stock that they don’t know anything about it. Has anyone here used fabric like this for making tents?

Is there some way of working out what it is exactly?

I doubt it would shield RF: too many gaps between the threads
IR reflection is the standard reason.
Make some night combat suits for the Ukranians?

“Make some night combat suits for Ukranians?”

Probably time to make some for French, UK and Polish soldiers while you’re at it. Same with Australia and Canada.

I don’t think this has anything like a 17% silver content, it feels much more like a plastic coating. I doubt that it would shield against IR.
A shame as I live only 500km from the Russian border, IR ponchos could have been a useful product.

I wondered about the country of origin. The label appears to be in English except for the color. The word “olove” is different from the spelling I normally see which is ” olive”.

Perhaps it’s a plastic coating to protect the silver? I was going to say to test it with a spot of vinegar but that may not work.

Meanwhile I’m taking no chances.

the original fabric is likely not IR reflective.  I got some like that once and it was not.  It can look silvery in visible spectrum but not in IR.

the last two pictures – it looks more shiny like aluminum foil – those reflect in IR (I assume)

It may not be very reflective in the IR, but it still may block IR transmission – somewhat.

Cheers
