Showers Pass Waterproof Socks

I have two pairs of their Merino WP socks and have worn them whilst riding to work on rainy days… They work fine for that purpose… I have also wondered what they would be like for a multi day hike…

One thing, when you pull them on, they ballon up as you shove your foot in and pull them up… Which makes me wonder just how breathable they are… I think they would keep water out but my concern is that they would hold sweat in just as well making your feet very soft and squashy… Like you’ve sat in a bath for too long…

I have a pair, but do not hike in them.  Others have posted that they will not last very long when hiked in, but I cannot confirm or deny.  I have heard the same of SealSkinz which appear to be of somewhat similar design.

I wear the SP socks with a thin wool liner in camp when my shoes are wet…they seem to work fine for that.  Were I to find myself in a very cold, wet hiking situation I might wear them and hope for the best, but would probably opt for the liner -> bread/oven bag -> Wool sock -> bread/oven bag VBL solution.

I’ve been considering buying a pair for some extra warmth on cold bicycle commutes. Do you think they would help, vs. thick but non-waterproof socks, below 0 °F? How would they be to wear all day at work? I have a mostly desk job, maybe 1/2 to 1 mile walking per day, and don’t want to faff around changing clothes once I get to work.
