Howdy. I’d like to carry my phone on my shoulder strap and I have not found a solution that I like. Most of the options available are baggy and floppy with a clunky zipper (MLD, Zimmerbuilt) or are cavernous (ZPacks). I’d really like something like the cases pictured below but with connections that securely work with daisy chains on shoulder straps. Any ideas?

And yes, I could leave my phone at home but that is not what this thread is about. Thanks.

I found the SWD pocket to be nicely tapered and not too baggy for a large phone.

Hmm. I just found the Phoozy. This might be what I am looking for. I think I can work with the connection point on the back.

Agree with this, I have it on my pack and have used it with my iPhone 8+ with a Mophie case on it. Fits great, not baggy, excellent solution.

“The stretchy Lycra one?”

Yes, the non-lycra one is rather huge. I have it, but haven’t used it and probably won’t.

I just sewed some 200d fabric to the strap

My machine didn’t want to sew through the strap so I did maybe 5 stitches with heavy nylon thread

How about the sticky magnets that attach to the back of the phone and which then attach to another magnet on a stalk on your car’s dash?  They’re very thin.  And the opposite magnet, stuck or sewn onto the strap could be very low-profile and quick to grab hold of.

But I think a better approach is akin to the lycra pockets in all running shorts / tops / jerseys made in the last 5 years – a stretchy, snug pocket that holds the phone as someone jogs.  But flare it at the top to get the phone in easily and grab hold of it easily, while the bottom 80% should be snug to keep it secure.

I have not reached a final design but I believe I have found a DIY solution using a scored/folded scrap of a blue CCF pad that slides into an older MLD bottle carrier. The blue pad takes up the extra space in the carrier making it less floppy. Additionally, the CCF material does not seem to activate the screen like some fabrics do. I don’t want the phone turning it’s screen on all day as I hike… It is interesting to note how easily Reflectix can activate the screen.

I used a Nite Ize cllip case for awhile and it worked well. Now that I carry water bottles on my shoulder straps I put my phone in a Gossamer Gear Hipster.

Would that throw off a compass?

I think this is something that is worth making yourself. You don’t have to necessarily start from scratch and learn to sew a lot of complicated things. You can often find things that will work with a little homemade tweaking from things you can find at the thrift store or garage sales.
