I have worn the Patagonia A/C Drifter as my backpacking shoe for the last 5 years. Patagonia no longer makes shoes, thus I need to find another shoe. Due to foot/ankle abnormalities, I cannot wear a boot, but need strong, boot-like, underfoot support when I carry a backpack. Regular hiking shoes and trail runners do not have the stiffness of the sole that I need. The A/C Drifter provided this in a low-top, sneaker-like style.

Any suggestions/recommendations?

Thanks, Polly

I haven’t worn the Drifter so I’m not sure how much support it really provides but there are many hiking shoe options that are like low cut boots.

A few that come to mind:

  • Vasque Breeze low tops (very thick tread, can’t feel even the sharpest rock). Should have non-WP options
  • Keen Voyager
  • Oboz are very sturdy
  • Salomon has some very sturdy shoes that fit like sneakers but have more support than many hiking shoes/boots.

More important is how they fit your feet, so I’m not sure if any of the above have a similar foot shape as the Patagonia shoes.
