Setting up tents in high winds

To avoid grief, frustration and “tent rage” here are my tent set-up tricks on very windy days:

1.) lay tent mostly unrolled/unfoled with your pack on top near the center.

2.) stake out corners tautly

3.) clip on or tie on GUY LINES to the fly and lay stakes near where they will be positioned (You DO have pre-made guy lines you carry for every tent, right?)

4.) remove backpack and insert poles (this is somewhat dependent on how your tent is designed)

5). raise tent with poles if using hiking poles or attach fly to pole frame if freestanding (then add inner tent after #8)

6.) immediately stake out guy lines

7.)tighten fly stake-out lines

8.)add fly hem stakes (if your tent has none SEW THEM ON at home) This keeps the fly from flapping noisily all night and saves on wear and tear. In high winds “more stakes is always better”

I’ve done this routine on days with 50 mph gusts and it works. Guylines on strong guy points and fly hem stakes are key for tent security. Use large rocks on stakes that need more “gription”.

Good luck because in very high winds you will need it.
