SEKI reservation experiences

Go to recreation.gov and do it online.

Well I will say you made me look, but wilderness permits in SEKI are only available by faxing or mailing in the form.   Looking did remind me I need to book a camping reservation in SEKI as well, but I want to see how the permit works out first I think.  You can book several other wilderness permits that way it looks like though.

Please forgive my ignorance but does that mean you are coming in from the west side? You can reserve an east side entry to the Rae Lakes Loop through this link

I guess I was not too clear in my original post.  We are planning on hiking the High Sierra Trail in 2106.  Our route is entry on the western end at Crescent Meadow in Sequoia National Park, and our exit is through Whitney Portal.

Thanks.  I thought since the first response also suggested me going through recreation.gov that my post seemed like this year’s trip was through Rae Lakes as well.

short story long, woke up at 4:45 and started to try faxing the permit application.  My home machine was out of ink in one cartridge and would not allow me to fax *&#!!.  Went to my work and after trying 3 machines found one that would scan a job and keep trying.  That machine says it got through after about 15 minutes of trying, to the fax method appears to be not too painful if you have access to the appropriate machine.  .Best I can tell out permit has been accepted, now I wait for the confirmation email.

Sorry, Matt. My experience is based on Eastern sierra THs. You have my condolences for the hassles you have to endure.

I tried faxing in at 6am PST this morning and got the return message that it didn’t go through because someone picked up and answered the line. Tried again a bit later and it said that there was no answer. Go figure…I’d guess they’re pretty busy with people putting in applications but the responses I got made it sound like I had the wrong number (checked it several times against the number on the permit application) or their fax machine wasn’t working.

Weird, guess I’ll just keep trying. Last year when I sent in a permit request I had no issues at all but I also wasn’t trying on the first day of reservation availability.

edit: Matt, if you got a successful transmission notice from your fax then it means they have received your permit application and will process it. Generally takes them a day or two to do that and then you’ll receive an email either confirming your permit or denying it because all the available reserve ahead spots are filled up.

I submitted my fax at 5:33 and it went through at 5:48.  Hoping to get a confirmation email today from them, not sure how long that takes.
