Seeking feedback on iOS app for backpackers – logbook focused on temperature and layering

Long-time lurker, first-time poster.

Since I started hiking and backpacking, I have always wanted to make gear for fellow backpackers. But learning to sew wasn’t promising with my aging eyes, so I decided to build apps for backpackers and hikers. The first one, Thermal Buddy, was released on App Store on May 4.

Would love to hear feedback from this community to improve the app.

I built Thermal Buddy to solve the ‘freeze-regret’ cycle by;

  • Logging temperature, weather, wind, gears used (layering and sleeping kit), and how you felt (cold – just right – hot)
  • Logging by activity and scene – active, static, sleep, transit (in and out of trailhead)
  • Searching with expected conditions for a specific activity and scene. It shows all the logs for the similar condition, activity and scene, both the ones that went well and the ones that didn’t so that the user can decide what to pack.

Feedback I am seeking from this community:

  • Honest and candid feedback on App from ultralight backpacker’s perspective
  • Features you want to see in Ver 1.2 (below) and later versions

History and plan:

Ver 1.0 was released on May 4 – based on what I wanted as a user
Ver 1.1 is currently on its way – to improve the onboarding process
Ver 1.2 is being planned now

Features already planned for Ver 1.2:

  1. Multi-day trip support – choose multiple logs and pack them as a multi-day trip

Features I personally want to see and you might request but have decided against for now:

  • Full gear list with weight information – I personally want this but haven’t been able to figure out how to achieve this without complicating user experience too far. (I might consider a separate app for ultralight backpacking community if and when Thermal Buddy becomes decently successful.)

Download:

If you are generous enough to test the app, you can download from App Store.
It is completely free up to 8 outing logs.

Thank you very much. Very interesting — I’ll take a look. It would be great to include packrafting as well.

¡Gracias! Please take a look and let know what you think.

The activities and gear categories are customizable (in Settings) and you can add Packrafting and other activities that you enjoy.
You can select icons for activities too although we currently don’t have one with image of packrafting. Icon set readily available from Apple is limiting and that’s the reason we do not have icons for gear today. My ambition is to create sets of original icons in future release. I will include one for packrafting for sure!

Version 1.1 was released this morning and I have started working on version 1.2, which is the version I’d love your input on.

The 2 things I am adding for sure in this version are;

  1. Multi-day trip support
  2. Introducing icons for Gear Categories. And broader choice of icons for Activities and Scenes

No.2 has been done. (See icons below)
Ivan, I created one for packrafting!

When I have No.1 ready, I am planning  TestFlight public testing in this community, to seek your feedback on what features should be added.
I will come back to you when it is ready.

Now I have finished building the two major features for Ver 1.2, and the app is ready for public testing on TestFlight (Apple’s beta testing platform).

If you are willing to test the app and give feedback, I truly appreciate your help!
The feedback I’d like from the community are;

1. Onboarding – did it communicate well what the app can do and how to use the app?
2. General user experience – pretend you are adding a log in your shelter, is it intuitive enough for you to create a log while in backcountry?
3. Improvement and new features – what do you want improvement upon and what new features do you think make the app better? Especially from PoV of an ultralight backpacker.

Features I personally want to see and you might request but have decided against for now:Full gear list with weight information – I personally want this but haven’t been able to figure out how to achieve this without complicating user experience too far. (I might consider a separate app for ultralight backpacking community if and when Thermal Buddy becomes decently successful.)

Appreciate your support!

Notes for those interested in TestFlight:
Once you are on TestFlight, the app is valid for 90 days from today (not from the day you install), so you can use the app pretty much through the summer.
But there is a catch: I cannot guarantee that the logs you create on TestFlight app can be migrated to the production version of the app, if I add a new feature requested from the community and if it requires a database scheme change, which is unlikely but I cannot exclude it as possibility. So please understand this is beta test and your logs may be lost.
If this is not acceptable but you are still willing to test the app, please try the currently available ver 1.1, which is free for 1 month and free forever up to 8 logs.

You can join Thermal Buddy TestFlight at Apple TestFlight.
Please open the link above from your iPhone. It will ask you to install Apple’s TestFlight app if you do not have it yet.

Appreciate your help to improve the app so that it can help ultralight backpackers avoid that “freeze – regret” cycle that many of us are familiar with.
