I’m in the market for a lightweight quilt for the summer season in the Cascade Mountains. Something that can handle temps down to 35-40 degrees.
Someone is offering me an HMG 40 degree quilt. I can’t try it in person. I’ve been looking at reviews, and it seems like a real mixed bag. A number of people have trashed it (without using it) for having sewn through baffles and no differential cut, features that a premium quilt should have. I’ve read other reviews where people talk about comfortably taking it down to 30 degrees. Ryan Jordan has said nice things about the 20 degree version (although I haven’t seen a formal review). I’m not sure whether that applies to the 40 degree model.
If you’ve tried out this quilt, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
The other option I’m considering is a 35-degree Nunatak quilt. I have a warmer Nunatak bag already and love it, but their summer quilt would be about 4 ounces heavier than the HMG. Not a deal breaker at all, but weight is one factor.

Hmg is sewn through I believe.. not as good

Oct 2, 2024 at 9:27 am #3819202Bag/quilt ratings are very hard to apply to an individual’s actual comfort… it varies so much from person to person. For me… that 40F rated quilt would be warm enough down to about 60F :)))
You mileage will definitely vary !
