Seeking advice on Notch Li first pitch handles up

I got the handle adapters to protect my cork handles a bit & keep from punching a hole in the dyneema roof; however, with the handles up I also have a concern for punching a hole in the floor.  Watching pitch videos it seems it may be difficult to see the ground where you’re planting the pole point (& I suppose you need to add the distance from basket to tip to overall pole length if they’ll be sinking into the turf.

Should my first pitch be point up to get a “handle” on things?  When pitching handle up do you need to unzip the fly a little more to peer through to the ground to insure pole point placement?

I’d appreciate any advice.  It’s windy today (20 mph) so I may wait until tomorrow to be safe.

Thanks!

I don’t think the trekking pole tip should be anywhere near your tent floor, with handle up. You’re nowhere near the floor. Unless I am doing something really wrong!

I always use rubber tips for my trekking poles, which eliminates the click, click, click sound that bugs me. You could carry a pair in your pocket (or in your tent stake bag…) and put them on to protect the floor of the tent.

I think Karen is saying that the pole does not rest on the floor of the tent.l It should be outside of the tent inner on dirt.

Thanks – I understand the tips on the dirt outside inner.  It is close to the inner though, considering you tension out the inner floor to widen it & put the pole handle on the strap.  Henry said in tips down to place a rock or something hard between the tip & the strap when tensioning the inner wider.  He also said higher likelihood of a puncture w handles up (the floor not the roof in this case).

so perhaps rubber tips is the solution, or carry something like washer disks to place between tip & strap. Or just pitch handle down.

The other question was pertaining to scrutinizing the tip to ground placement more then one would if pitching handles down, because if you’ll be pulling the inner floor strap out to place the tip on, it’s gotta be close to some degree.

Gary Dunckel – do you use the slip on rubber tips or screw on replacement rubber tips?

I used adjustable poles and simply left them a little short during initial setup, then positioned and extended them to fine tune the pitch.

Steve, I use the slip-on type tips for all of my poles. There is good friction, and I’ve never had one come off.
