So I broke one of the quicklace mechanisms on my Salomon XA Pro 3d shoes yesterday while hiking and it made me realize that 1) I did not have a plan in place to deal with this on trail so I was wondering what people use as a back up? I figured I would just use some guy line if needed. 2) How reliable are these in peoples experience and what do people use in place of this system if you do not like them?

The other thing I wanted to say is Salomon is awesome. They sent me a new quicklace kit for $1.09 today which is fantastic!

I have been using Salomons since 2007 and never had one break. I had one fray some but the shoe had ~500 miles on it.

Where did it break?

The lace did not break the tightening mechanism snapped along the seam on the side and the whole thing crumbled in my hand as I was tightening it.

I have broken laces and the plastic mechanism. I used to carry a full lace repair kit until I discovered the X Ultra Prime version of my beloved X Ultra. The Prime uses a normal lace system which I strongly prefer for flexibility of lacing and the ability to use some bear or guyline to repair it. Speedlaces are really nice for a midnight pee but I don’t trust them at all.

Since I only broke one mechanism I am planning on bringing the other half of the kit on my long trip this summer. I hiked 6 miles yesterday with the lace just looped back through the laces down the tongue and it was perfectly snug. If somehow both mechanisms failed on me again I would just use some guy line.

I cut one lace and tightener from a worn out shoe, cleaned it and put it in with my repair kit. The weight is tiny though it has been dead weight. I have had no breakage in four seasons, with a new pair each year as the soles get overly worn and mesh rips. Wearing gaiters helps lower the chances of damage from both impact and grit.

Thanks for the info! I do wear gaiters. It didn’t just break though, I was standing up when I yanked on it quite hard. It was totally my fault.
