I did a little searching on both here and the web without much luck.  I’m looking for some advice on a pole for my Supermid.

MLD – https://mountainlaureldesigns.com/product/pyramid-tent-poles/

  • Lighter
  • Smaller diameter (maybe not as strong?)
  • Adjustment via 3″ extension
  • Cheaper – $95ish shipped

Ruta Locura – http://rutalocura.com/?page_id=5922/

  • Heavier
  • Larger diameter CF (stronger?)
  • Adjustment via push button and machined holes
  • Larger adjustment range (+/- 4″ from whatever I order)
  • More expensive – $120ish shipped

I’m leaning more toward the Ruta Locura pole.  I have a pole and pole jack for my Cricket from them, they turned out great.  Hesitating a little mostly on weight and cost, I was hoping someone had some first hand experience with a larger mid (the adjuster is different for the smaller mids).

Thanks!

What are the comparative weights?   I use Ruta Locura poles with my mids and I like the convenience of a shock-corded, easily adjustable pole with a larger adjustment range that may be stronger.

Check out Seek Outside as well. They used to have cf poles for their mids. My pole for my LBO has about 12″ of adjustability, and is rock solid and light…for what it’s worth.

Good luck!

@Michael – MLD is 4.5oz, Ruta Locura is about 7.5oz. Do you use their push button adjusting kind, or the twist lock style? I have the twist lock style, they are great!

@Logan
– I’ll check seek outside, totally forgot about those guys!

I have both and prefer the push button.  Both work great, but my experience with twist lock trekking poles failing is why I prefer the push button even though the RL have worked fine so far.

Opted for the Ruta Locura!  Thanks for the advice!

My comments are too late, but for a SuperMid I’d opt for the push button adjustment esp if you 1) are setting up over snow and/or 2) you have a silnylon mid. The push button would make it easier to adjust the height during set up and if and when the silnylon stretches.

@Bruce – that’s what I was thinking as well, especially with the silnylon bit (mine is sil). Thanks!
