I’m looking to add another pair or two of running shorts to add to my wardrobe with the following characteristics:
- Secure pocket to accommodate an iphone SE with bare minimum of bouncing being tolerable (loose hand pockets will not work for this purpose)
- Boxer brief style lining (though I would consider brief style lining or unlined if the shorts are otherwise very appealing)
- 7” or longer length
It would be nice if they had additional storage to hold a gel or car key too, but this additional storage is not an absolute requirement for me. Zippered closures are a major bonus for any pockets. These are primarily for running and don’t need to take a backpack hip-belt into consideration.
Anyone have first-hand experience or care to comment on any of these?

I use the following currently:
Nike+ shorts that have an ipod sleeve on the thigh that the iphone 5/SE fit snugly into. This carry location/execution is really nice. I’ve thought about modifying other shorts with a similar sleeve – but anything too loose fitting or baggy might be problematic. These are I think 9” shorts with boxer brief lining and are a bit on the heavy side – though the heaviness combined with the cut probably helps with the functionality of the thigh sleeve.
Salomon HK II shorts with a rear hip pocket that get the job done, but I wish the pocket was a little better at controlling the mass of the phone while on particularly technical trails. These are lighter weight shorts, 8-9” length, with boxer brief lining. These have hand pockets too.
Arcteryx Incendo Long. The rear waist band pocket is a great location and size/volume for me – though it does get pretty wet from sweat. I’m not a huge fan of the overall fit of these shorts and I’d prefer them to have a lining. I have a pair of the shorter (7”) version of the incendo too that fit me a lot better and have a boxer-brief lining. They lack pockets though.
Anyone got any recommendations for me or reviews of the ones I’m considering above? I realize this topic isn’t necessarily aligned with the focus of this forum/site, but I really don’t post on any running forums.
