Is a BACKPACKER magazine “gear”? Well, it’s “indoor gear” that has fed my backpacking appetite for decades – which really means my endless gear appetite as well.
Today I threw several years of BACKPACKER magazine into the recycle bin. I haven’t subscribed in over 8 years and finally my wife had it with my hoarding of them. I agree with her, they had to go. (sob!)
I let my subscription lapse in 1980…
Back issues are online (iirc Google books). Â Most items are pretty heavy tho serious snow may call for it.
They did have some UL-ish articles even sprinkled throughout the 1990s, though many articles were traditional weight tied to the big names. Â Still loved the mag even if for trip suggestions but their customer service was pretty slow.

I fear the term “vintage,” like most things, has been dumbed down. I don’t consider anything under 20 years truly vintage, and really, for me, at least 35 years+. My 1970’s Backpacker Magazines are what I’d consider actually “vintage.”
But it is indeed an arbitrary term subject to personal interpretation for sure.
