Removing down from an overstuffed parka?

My old Everest parka is no surplus to requirements but I find I need something inbetween in terms of insulation.

My new winter parka for Alaska is the Mountain Hardwear  Absolute Zero in XL

My old parka is an Australian XL so a US Large. I needed the new parka to allow some layering underneath it

I am trying to guestimate how much of the existing fill to remove to give me a parka about as warm as a Patagonia Fitzroy. In other words how much 650FP down is going to be equal to 9.5 ounces of 800FP down which is what an XL Fitzroy is stuffed with I think [ 9 ounces in a Medium] the parka has 650 grams of 650FP down currently about 22 ounces.

I don’t need two -40 rated parkas

The alternative would be to have all of the old down removed and restuffed with 850FP but the difference in cost is going to be substantial and I’m not sure the cost benefit ration would be on my side

OR… sit by a nicely sparking campfire and soon you’ll have enough spark holes to rid you of that pesky, weighty down you don’t need.

Superglue the holes shut when your (down) equilibrium has been achieved.

Actually I recently bought an Eddie Bauer PEAK XV expedition parka and may even put a bit of DWR treated down in the upper arm areas. I have some loose down from Ripstop by the Roll and it has the same DWR treatment that The North Face uses. I experimented with a small handful sitting in a highball glass 1/2 full of water for 3 days. NO plumules below the meniscus! I’m convinced, especially since I got the water in the glass by spraying it ON the down I put in the glass beforehand.

Richard kindly answered a similar question a year or two ago but I cannot find that thread.

If 800FP down is 60% more weight efficient than 650FP and the parka was 50% over-filled at construction [ to resist wind compression] then taking it down to standard fill rate; which means removing ~220 grams of down leaves me with ~430 grams of down in the parka. I estimate [ie: it’s a WAG] that this is the equal of approximately 300 grams of 800FP

Does this sound close?

I was debating having all the old down removed and replacing it with 800FP stuff but the down is $221 for the 300 grams
