I prefer a remote canister for cooking etc and while my brain has been idling the last while I got to thinking about using canisters in really deep cold conditions without resorting to heat packs and the use of warm bodily fluids in insulated bowls.
Assuming a lightly insulated thin plywood base and my FireMaple 117T stove [ at least I think its a 117T] how could you make something to keep the canister at a working temperature?
Also this is for me a theoretical exercise as I’ll never get to see really deep cold again.
Would a 1mm thick aluminium sheet transfer enough heat? A strip of copper similar in size to a Moulder strip and directly in the flame path bolted to the aluminium plate?
A thick and well insulated copper wire leading to a spring loaded wrap made to suit the canister dimensions?

Easy enough.
The canister will lose heat through 4 channels:
Conduction to the snow it is sitting on (large)
Radiation from the canister to the ‘sky’ (small)
Conduction to the ambient air (small?)
Evaporation of the propane as fuel leaves the canister (minor)
So insulating the canister from the snow is the big one.
However, you will need more than that. I put the canister right near the gap in the windshield so it gets some radiation from the flames: that helps keep it quite warm, usually above 0 C. Needless to say, the Touch Test (TM) is vital here for safety: monitor the canister temperature all the time. Warm, but not too warm.
That is not the only way of doing it.


This is from a video taken by a Norwegian group. Frankly, it worries me a bit. At the very least you need a hose which is longer than the normal ones supplied, and you need to make sure it does not get in the flames! Apparently it worked, but I would not do it myself.
