Discovered a new energy bar this morning while stocking up on alcohol at the local purveyor. It’s called Regrained, and it’s made from reclaimed grain (mostly barley) from San Francisco area breweries. They’re still a startup, but you can purchase direct and on Amazon.

There are two flavors, and each bar weighs 1.24o. The Chocolate Coffee Stout has 160 calories, 60 from fat. The Honey Cinnamon IPA has 140 calories, 40 from fat. They’re tasty, compact and the wrapping is compostable. They seem like they can handle the heat and abuse of being in a pack.

Note – I have nothing to do with the company.

Sounds so good I’ll bet Sam Adams is looking into it. I’ll check Las Vegas’ Lee’s Discount Liquors and if they don’t have it I’ll ask them to get it and leave the website address.

As a homebrewer, I’ve been making bars and granola from spent barley for quite awhile.  Spent grain is high in fiber and protein per weight.  The process of mashing takes out most of the sugars but leaves most of the proteins and fibers.  The spent grain can feel a little fibrous, though, so you need to mix other things in it.

A good friend of mine makes bread from spent barley acquired from his homebrewer friend. Very rich and filling bread. Quite tasty, too.

Bread from spent barely, spread with Vegemite, and served with a beer. No waste.
