Yes Roger, on many long distance trails such as the Florida Trail, there are long sections that follow dirt and paved roads. This means that when it’s time to bed down there often aren’t any “legal” spots to make camp. Simply put, you may have to bed down on private land.

And of course this is America, land of gun toting rednecks. Most won’t actually shoot you, but they might call the police or at least talk to you like a dog. That’s why I use a camo or olive drab tarp and wear earth tone clothes if I’m trying to fly under the radar.

And besides, even when I’m camping on public lands I’d rather people not know that I’m there. For example, I might leave camp to fish or climb with a small daypack, and I don’t want my expensive gear to be stolen.

Ah – different lands, different folks.
In Oz most bushwalking is done in National Parks – lands the farmers could never use. The good stuff! If we were to camp on a farmers land out on the plains (most unlikely!), I doubt any of them would care anyhow.
I did once ask a UK farmer if he minded if we camped somewhere on his property – it was pouring rain at the time. He suggested a corner of a nearby paddock as it had good shelter against the wind, and then added that there was an outdoors tap at the side of the farmhouse.

Cheers
