refilling with msr isopro canisters

I have an msr isopro canister

When I connect a g works gas saver r1, only gas comes out.  Canister right side up, upside down,…

Maybe the pickup inside the canister has a float so it floats to the top so it always outputs gas

or something

maybe I’m making some mistake, but screwing on the gas saver, turning upside down, opening valve on gas saver and letting it run for a while is as basic as it gets.  Nothing to screw up.  Gas comes out so the gas saver must be working and there’s no way it could convert liquid to gas

I assume you are trying to transfer to another canister. Are you heating the donor canister and cooling the receiving canister? If so, I don’t think the phase of the transferred fuel matters, as long is fuel moves from the donor to the receiver.

How can you tell whether liquid or gas (or a mixture) is being transferred?

Screw gas saver onto donor canister, turn upside down, open valve, just gas comes out.

Hmmm… tried it again, ahhh…  if I leave the valve open longer then liquid came out.  I was too tenuous before because I didn’t want to release a bunch and blow up the house.

But it’s still not refilling.

But there was just a bit right at the beginning – the donee went from 4.93 to 4.96 ounces, then it shut off

Maybe the valve on the donor shuts off if there’s too much flow – it thinks it released to air and then shut off as a safety precaution.

So I put the donee back on and just cracked open the valve of the gas saver.  Now I can transfer 0.5 ounces.  I need to rewarm the donor and recool the donee and try again, I think this will work.

I haven’t used the gas saver for years – I use cheap butane in cartridges that have a different adapter.   Someone gave me a couple MSR Isopro canisters 16 ounces.

Has anyone noticed that the isopro valve stops if too much liquid tries to go through it?

I can open the valve when it’s upright and gas flows through no problem, it doesn’t shut off.

I have a large propane tank and if I open it quickly it shuts off.  I have to open very slowly to get it to work.

In my use case, my donor canister is usually less than half full. I put the receiving canister in the freezer and put the donor in a pot of hot water. Usually that’s enough to empty out the donor and/or fill the receiving canister to the correct weight. If it’s a little too full, that’s easy to fix.

Remember, it’s really only the temperature difference that is allowing you to make the transfer. Otherwise, the equilibrium vapor pressure is the same.

thanks

yeah, I’ve routinely done this for years, but these new Isopro canisters are weird for me for some reason.  I think it works if I just go slowly.  I got distracted so haven’t finished yet

with the cheap butane, all I had to do was put the donor under my armpit for a while which was sufficient.

I refill msr isopro 4oz cannisters from 8 and 16 oz isopro cans all the time.  Probably refilled 5 or 6 different cans

Just refilled 2 last week and used one on the weekend

I’ve never had a problem.

I freeze the donor and don’t even bother warming the sender any more
