There’s probably an official term for this. I’m looking for a UL bag/pack for taking side-trips on a backpacking trip when I want to leave all my gear behind except for a bit of food, bottle of water, and first aid kit.

Yeah, I am not sure of the name myself, but Sea to Summit makes a small pack that is quite light. Actually they make two: https://seatosummitusa.com/collections/all-products-except-sale/products/ultra-sil-nano-travel-daypack?_pos=1&_sid=a2b09b331&_ss=r and https://seatosummitusa.com/collections/all-products-except-sale/products/ultra-sil-dry-day-pack?_pos=2&_sid=a2b09b331&_ss=r
The S2S pack linked above seams to fit the bill nicely. You could duel purpose it by using it as a stuff/storage sack in your main backpack. I could see it working well as a quilt/sleeping bag storage sack. Empty it in camp and load it up with side-trip essentials.
My wife and I both use Sea To Summit silnylon day packs… we use them as sleeping bag stuff sacks, and daypacks for dayhikes once settled in to a camp.
I just remembered that Oware USA has a similar option: https://bivysack.com/shop/ols/products/daypack-stuffsack. 1.9 ounces heavier than the S2S because it uses heavier fabric (30D vs. 15D silnylon), but that should mean that it’s more durable.
Many of the cheap drawsting totes kids wear would be very light-couple of ounces?
I’m a fan of side trips from my back country base camp. The Sea to Summit UltraSil Nano is great. Carries well, keeps its shape, and is not merely a stuff sack with shoulder straps.
For longer dayhikes, look at the Outdoor Research Isolation Pack LT. It’s 8.6 oz and 18 liters. It’s lighter that the small REI Flash. The seams and foam back give it good structure. It hugs my back like a little monkey. Apparently discontinued by OR, but it’s still available on Amazon.
Yeah, The StS is probably not very durable for 1oz/18L. The other is The other is 3.8oz for 22L but can go larger withba bag stuffed in the webbing (likely 13L with a dry bag.) The Oware sil version looks real good and also has a hip belt, but lacks the webbing.
I have a silnylon bag for my down quilt.
I sewed some grosgrain loops for shoulder straps for side trips out of base camp. Good enough to carry a pint of water, some food, extra clothing
Nice to learn about that 1-ounce S2S offering. Their older one was about 2.5 ounces and stored in the volume of a large lemon rather than “a chicken egg”.
Less expensive alternatives are on Amazon and eBay for around $8-$10, but weight specs are always hard to trust until you get it in hand. I’ve had some hits (2.4, 2.6 ounces) and some misses.
The side-trip daypack multi-purposes as a food or clothing bag. If you bring a sit-pad anyway, it’s worth giving up a 2 liters of volume to have some padding and structure in those daypacks.
Be careful with the 15d fabric. I have a few S2S 15d ultrasil stuff sacks and they are very delicate indeed.
I use the sea to summit pack all the time. Great stuff!
p.s. mine’s some earlier iteration of the 40.00 dollar pack that I got at REI many years ago. It’s held up perfect with lots of home day use as well as side trip use.

I think that might weigh more than James Marco’s everyday pack :)
Y’all are nuts. Why add to the weight of your full pack just to lower the weight when you’ve got almost nothing at all anyway? I use my main pack for dayhikes away from the tent. I hardly know it’s there.
What Todd said :)
Or, add shoulder straps to the biggest stuff sack you carry. Probably the one for your sleeping bag or tent.
Dave,
S2S offers both: the ultra-sil nano daypack is 1.0 oz. The larger and more comfortable ultra-sil day pack is 2.5 oz. I’ve been contemplating one for this purpose also – as a summit pack.
