Recommend an ultralight, breathable bivy?

Several years ago I bought a Titanium Goat bivy sack, and it’s been great. I’ve used this as my sole shelter when the forecast is clear out in the desert of Big Bend. I’ve also used it as a complete “container” to bundle my sleep system under a tarp, guard against rain spray, and extend the effective range of my 30° quilt.

… And now my friends want their own 😅 and in particular, they want them FAST for a desert trip we’re doing in just 3 weeks.

I haven’t followed gear makers closely in the last few years, but it seems like Ti Goat is no more. My next bet would be Borah Gear, but they have a multi-week lead time. I see MLD has the Superlight bivy, but that’s a little more spendy – and a little less mesh in the hood – than what I’m looking for.

I’m not sure where else to look. Can someone suggest an ultralight bivy model that meets the following criteria?

  • Available for sale immediately: needs to ship in – let’s say – 1-2 business days
  • Ultralight – about 8oz or less
  • Has a waterproof floor paired with an upper that is breathable (and possibly water resistant)
  • Some amount of mesh in the hood

Thank you!

Borah Gear and MLD.. I own and use both. Great bivys. MLD you have option for full mesh near head or half moon.. I went full and its plenty.  Check out Katabatic Gear Bristle cone bivy. I have used one for many years and it is awesome too. The site says ships in 1- 2 business days !!!

MLD lead times might be too far out.

David at Oware aka bivysack.com also makes very excellent bivvies.

@dirtbaghiker   Having both, do you favor the bristlecone or pinon?  I assume you use them for different times of the year.  Looking at these for spring in the NE, but then also for 3 season out west.

@freeradical
  Garage Grown Gear has both katabatic bivies, free shipping, and is returnable.

Katabatic for sure. Pinon(pictured) or Bristlecone.

You might want to look at Yama Wind bivy. It seems to fit all your requirements concerning weight, breathability, and availability. The topic is mesh type fabric, but thicker and stronger than no-see-um mesh, so it provides splash protection. It’s treated with DWR. The bivy retains some heat due to thicker type of reinforced mesh used.

I have it and the materials and workmanship are excellent 👍. Y-zipper configuration really makes it easy to access and eggres. If you are tall, you may want to wait for the longer option to be offered.
