I’d appreciate your recommendations on hiking shoes. I don’t want super lightweight, something that will hold up. I’m looking at the Asics Nimbus gel 17, but very expensive . Any recommendations ?

I have  had plantars  fasciitis since 1996. Orthatics are a must and have  used Motion Control shoes like the Brooks Beats.  I have done the JMT 3 times in running shoes and gaiters.

The two times I’ve had bad flares of plantars fasciitis, it resolved by doing two things:

  1. wearing more padded shoes whenever I could around town.
  2. not letting my toes point away from my knees while I slept.  I played with an ACE wrap around my ankle, rigid strap-on ankle casts, and those “soft casts” that have a strap from the toe to the shin to proven over-extending one’s toes at night.

If I was casual about those steps, it tool a few weeks to resolve.  If I was rigorous about doing those steps, it was all better in 7-10 days.

I also think the night “boot” helped me.  I also think that switching to Montrail AT Plus shoes (from light hiking boots) helped me quite a bit; that model has been discontinued and I’m not sure what the current equivalent is.  Initially I used green Superfeet but after a while that seemed not to help, and I just used the normal insoles with my shoes.  For my daily street shoes I wore Brooks pretty much exclusively for a couple of years.
