At less than 4 grams, no batteries and less than $40 seems a no brainer to have one.

If you’re not familiar it is primarily used to located someone buried in an avalanche. It is now being used with SAR. In conjunction with a Spot, In-Reach ect….. Seems like it would help SAR locate you a lot faster than without it.

Feel free to read about it at the link below.

That is great they have separate “attachable” units. Not as useful here in the Northeast as the locator devices are less common than out West, but this is improving as more and more SAR and the like start to utilize the RECCO search devices in the field.

Further, more and more winter gear and apparel is already starting to use it integrated into the products.

Thanks for pointing this out!

I guess you can search around that site at the link you posted… but maybe I need a beacon to help me find what exactly this thing is, what it looks like, and how to buy??? Not obvious from what comes up…

In the context of avalanches, I suspect it will be more useful for recovery than for rescue. Don’t give up your beacon just yet.

Has anybody found any hiking related success stories or related feedback from any SAR? A cursory glance showed most of of Recco equipped locations being as being in Colorado and beyond which would make sense. So limited utility on the east coast at this time but something to consider if located in elsewhere? I really do hate reading the stories of missing hikers either not found for weeks, months and sometimes never.

You can also get on Amazon

Chris,

It’s huge out west and Europe were there’s a avalanche hazard which is what the original intent was for. So not sure how many hikers or backpackers are even aware of this technology
