Anker today recalled their venerable PowerCore 10000 power bank:

At 6.2 ounces, it was very popular on these forums not so long ago, and my two are still going strong. Unfortunately, some have been exploding and causing fires– see cpsc.gov. Time to dig them out and somehow find a safe way to dispose of them. If you jump through all the hoops, Anker will replace with a much more powerful 10,000 mAh power bank – but not a lighter one, at 8.6 oz. Only listing I could find for the replacement is on Anker’s Singapore site.

Thanks for the info.  That’s my main power bank for longer trips; and they have created quite an obstacle course to get a replacement that wont meet my needs.  Not what I expected from Anker.  I’ll probably just get a replacement from someone else.

Thanks.  I just checked and I have a different Anker with 10,000 mAh.

They have them for $25 Canadian on Amazon Canada

I checked using my serial # and the one I bought there in ’22 isn’t affected by the recall which they stated is for units bought in the US, so those Amazon Canada ones should be good

Yeah, disappointing replacement options from Anker…

I was looking around at other options, and will be purchasing an INIU P50 instead. INIU has a good reputattion on r/Ultralight, and it’s 5.9 ounces including USB-C cable. Much faster charging (in and out) than the original Anker, smaller, more ports, and reasonably priced.

If you do have this model, do verify your S/N on the recall website to make sure it is among the affected units.  My A1263 is not involved in the recall.

Entered my serial number and they say mine is safe to use and not part of the recall. Hmmm. Low confidence in them.   For $20, I will be throwing it away so my house does not burn down.  The time/benefit ratio to even get partially thru the hoops to claim a recall worked out to be less than minimum wage.

I’d suggest people take them to a battery recycling location.  Our city hall does it for free.   I think our Batteries + Bulbs might take them for free.

I had a Nitecore that swelled up about 1/8 inch.  I spent time contacting them about it.  They referred me to someone else, round and round.  Someone in the chain finally said “It’s out of warranted but we suggest you stop using it and dispose of it at a battery recycling faclility”.  I took it apart but didn’t learn much.  I recycled it.  Now the other one I have has also decided to do it.  I think some of these things have a life span of just a few years.  I have an older battery that has not done it.  It’s 10 years old and has a light in it also.  The problem is, it’s one USB-A out and the capacity when new was something like 5000.  I doubt it has that now.  Maybe I’ll get that brand name and browse their newer products.

I’ve been using a narrower 10,000 power bank for years without a problem

And a 13,000 that looks more like the picture above, no problems

I wonder if the power banks identified in the recall are actually riskier than other usb power banks.  Maybe they just randomly had a few failures in one model, so issued a recall for it.  Other models have the same, fairly low, risk.

I wonder if the failure is just when you’re charging it, or discharging.  Maybe one should keep an eye on those.  One could not do it on a flammable surface or something.

If it could catch fire at any time, just sitting there, that would be harder to deal with.

Mine was part of the recall, and I submitted for a replacement. I have others that I use for outings, but it’ll come in handy in other uses. It seemed to work fine for me.
