Hi all!

I am slowly getting back into backpacking, and trying to lighten up from my 1990’s Terraplane, MH Room With A View tent, etc.  I will mostly be doing 3-season overnights locally, and occasionally section hikes of the AT, and more often the FT.  My back is held together with screws, bailing wire and beer cans, so I want to go as light as I can, but be reasonably prepared for probabilities, and be able to sleep at night.

Right now, my pack weight with add ons and a DCF liner is 29 oz (ZPacks Arc Haul w/a few extra pockets) is 29 oz; and Tent/Shelter is 33.7 oz (HMG Echo 2 including stakes/guys/stuffsacks/ground cloth).  So pack/shelter (all in) is 3.9 pounds by my math.

I wonder if I am in a generally reasonable spot for the Big3 +1 if I add =/- 2.5 -3 pounds for a sleep system? My total big 3 weight would still be less than just my old beloved heavy Terraplane. (Right now I can comfortably use a Costco quilt to sleep, but I know that won’t work for early spring/fall anywhere but right here on the Gulf.)

Any thoughts would be helpful.

TIA!

p.s. I am toying with a lighter tent like the TT Aeon Li for when my wife will not be present, which would shave some shelter weight.  It’s only money……………..:(

Hi Mark,
I played around with a high end and came up with 7 pounds using a 32 ounce pack and very similar gear to what you described.

Playing around on the lower end: tarp for 10 ounces,  quilt for 21 ounces, pack for 15 ounces, pad for 10 ounces (assumed Uberlight, but you could go closed cell), so say 3.5 pounds. Other folks can go much lower.

The Arc Haul and TT Aeon Li are some pretty awesome choices for light gear that’s comfortable.

A NeoAir XLite is 12 oz. A quilt or sleeping bag rated to 30 degrees would probably work where you’re going. They’re around 20 oz.

My math says that’s just 2 lbs. for the two. Throw in a 3 oz pillow if you like and live like a king.

Meee too getting back – in my 60.  and I’m getting same tent and backpack – you are   Under 2 pounds for tent pack and bag is an awesome start.   Use lighterpack.con to start tracking all.  And buy the best you can afford – I put off this year going anywhere and shop – next year JMT and when I retire more longer thru hikes.   I’m leaving king at 10 pounds right now without any consumibles or bear canister. My goal is nothing over 12 pounds max.   I’m going to get very selective on food weight too.  JMT there is plenty of water so don’t think you need liters upon liters on your pack.    good luck
