Really Niche Fuel Canister Sourcing (West Virginia)

Hey,

I had to give away all my fuel canisters before we moved to West Virginia (illegal to send thru and I honored that). Soooooo….I was “OK, I’ll just get some at ol’ Walmart and get by till I can get to REI or similar”.

Yeah, so the local Wally World in Charles Town, WV has empty shelves for it. Face palming moment.

Anyone live in the Eastern Panhandle of WV or nearby in Virginia, that can tell me places to source fuel canisters? Is there anyone in Harpers Ferry that sells them for AT hikers? I won’t go into Maryland for certain reasons. I do go to Leesburg, VA  or Winchester, VA to shop.

I am not picky about brands, but I literally am screwed right now. I can’t do any photo shoots or videos till I find fuel.

I thought about Dicks in Martinsburg, WV, but I hate those jerks. Anyone but them.

When I can’t find any 4oz cans locally-happens often, I check hardware stores, big and small, Ace, Home Depot, small mom and pop stores. Also, local campground stores. Same for sporting good stores, big and small. If that fails, Amazon or Home Depot sell Gas One cans and can be shipped to stores-Home Depot.

FWIW I stopped looking at Walmart as they only ever have 8oz plus size cans if any at all.

The local Dicks in my town usually has 4oz canisters in stock.

Agreed that their name suits them. ;) Actually, they’ve been pretty OK for me. Their prices are nuts sometimes, but they take returns without hassle and always make things right.

Or Amazon/Walmart/REI/etc mail-order. It’s legal to ship (properly marked) fuel by truck (not by air).

As an FYI, Walmart and REI don’t ship anymore for fuel. It’s due to regulations – has to be ground. Amazon will ship…but…and a big but, you pay for that in the end – like $19 for one Jet Boil canister. It has to go UPS ground.

I will check for an Ace here (we had them all over on the west coast).

I know I am a major snob, but I don’t trust super off brands. I have had stoves fouled up badly by them over the years, and had to tear down a stove to “clean” it. Not fun. The Gas One brand I keep seeing, but then I wonder….just how nasty is it? I typically only use MSR or Snow Peak Giga fuel.

I looked at REI and like nothing is listed as in stock for Tyson Corner, VA. Oh well.

Seems like your views/boundaries are causing some hardships. I can respect that.

I’ll be near Harpers Ferry on Friday. I can bring a refilled canister if you want to stop by.

PM me if you wish to follow up.

I have used gas one before

It didn’t work as good as MSR isopro in the cold, otherwise fine

Did your stove foul up in a regular upright stove or was it an inverted stove?

Jerry, I’ll try the Gas One. The one stove that time was an upright simple one (I think a Primus, but you know…memories….lol). I don’t need winter fuel right now so I will have time to find an REI with MSR fuel in stock. I can at least buy the One brand on Amazon.

Hey Mark,

I think I’ll try the One Gas brand and see if it fouls up an older stove ;-) And if it does, hey, a blog post…hahahah! It’s funny, with our move I found gear I didn’t know I still had, so bonus on old stoves. But thank you so much for the offer. I really appreciate it.

I prefer MSR fuel too, but beggars can’t be choosers ;)? I have used almost all off branded cans and it never clogged up any stoves. Just doesn’t work as well as MSR in temps at or below freezing. Gas One cans were no issue.

Another option is getting a refill adapter, then if you find the big MSR cans, you can refill your 4oz can.

I prefer Gas One.  Because I’m a cheapskate.  Or whatever weird brand they have at the Korean grocer.

And then refill into whatever canister I prefer, almost always an 8 ounce canister because it has a broader base and the 4 ounce canisters don’t quite have enough for my trips.

I have never had a stove foul up.  In upright mode, only gas comes out of the canister so much less likely to foul up the stove.

Jerry, you always make me smile! I ordered a 6 pack to try out. I have time to get the good stuff before winter. It’s going to be 82 today, so I am not overly worried about 4 season gas. Lol.

As Jerry said

(My emphasis)

Cheers

Def a good point. I usually keep my canisters upright. I only use one that goes upside down on rare occasions (it’s so finicky I prefer to not use it).

Half my gear is still packed. Apparently the movers put it in the basement, not where it was marked to go. I haven’t even found my trekking poles. Sigh.

Reviving this a bit, but Sarah have you been to Mountain Trails in Winchester? They’re a local store that I’ve had good experience with (well I haven’t actually been to the Winchester one, but they have two other locations I have been to and I’d recommend). Also welcome to WV.

Ryan, thank you! I will check that out next time I am in Winchester. It’s faster to drive to Costco there than Leesburg, VA.
