I have used single rainbow for four years now on AT and PCT and around northern Michigan. Zero problems. Small footprint. Easy to set up. Plenty of room for me and my stuff. Everything including stuff sack and ground cloth is 2#10oz.

Altaplex? Wondering if loosing my money and one pound is worth it. Larger footprint? Lots of staking out. Easy to pitch when weather is windy?

New single rainbow with waterproof sil? And carbon pole?

Just looking for opinions. I don’t see any really recent reviews of the Altaplex. Maybe this winter.

Thanks.

I’m close; I have the double rainbow and the Altaplex (and a Triplex and BA FlyCreek UL 2… need the right combo when I’m packing for a family of 4 and 2 dogs!).

The Alta is my favorite tent when I’m solo by far. It has a bit bigger of a footprint but I’ve not yet had an issue even with using it in off trail. When things are tight you don’t pitch the doors so it stays small. With practice setup is not a big deal but I can set the Double Rainbow faster and almost never need to adjust it whereas with the Alta I sometimes screw up when I’m tired and have to do it again. I do REALLY like the height of the Alta and the very steep walls, it’s practically a ‘mid. It feels very roomy and not soaking up water weight here in the PNW is super nice too. I love how the top overhangs so even on very rainy nights I leave a door open with no issues. Oh and the weight is freaking amazing obviously.

I think what it comes down to is the price as if they were equal it would be no contest. But that’s not the case as the Altaplex is quite pricey. For the price to weight ratio, the Notch is tough to beat too so definitely deserves a look.
