What do you use for a leisure backcountry camp rain shelter?
In the past we’ve gone for distance and are completely comfortable with minimizing in-camp time. This year,  we’re more interested in hiking shorter distances and doing some fancier cooking than our traditional FBC. We’re recovering from some injuries, and my last son is returning from 2 years in Finland and our goal is to wrap him back into the family with quality time. AND, we’re still adjusting to the rainier PNW!
What do you recommend as a relatively lightweight shelter where we can gather to cook and talk in the evenings or during the inevitable morning rains? Â I’m considering everything from a blue tarp to a silnylon cat tarp, to something ridiculous like an Ultamid 4 that I hear is large enough to consume an entire picnic table.
The good thing is that my kids are strong–they can carry the extra weight and not bat an eye. Ultimately I’d love to have something super lightweight for future use–the family is only going to expand with kids approaching marriage age.
