I am hoping for some advice regarding backpacking rain jackets. I have done a load of online research and tried some on in-store, but cannot settle on one. Cost is certainly a consideration, but I also don’t want to be in a situation where I feel the need to replace/upgrade in the near future. My outdoor activity is mostly multi-day section hikes and bike packing. My priority at this point is for hiking, but if it can be ideal for both activities then I would be thrilled.
I believe that I have narrowed my options to the OR Helium II, Marmot Precip and the EMS Thunderhead. The weight of the Helium is very attractive to me, but from what I understand the breathability is not very good and under exertion tends to leave the wearer wet from sweat anyway. I understand that the HD has the pitzips and other additional comforts, but then the weight savings is negligible compared to the other two options and at a higher price. It seems a lot of people like the Precip, but the Thunderhead appears to have all the same functionality at a lower cost and weight.
Any input would be greatly appreciated and I am open to suggestions for alternative items that I may have overlooked.
