Quilts Strapped to CCF Pads

Any users who have a experience with mating quilts to CCF pads? I plan on using my EE quilt with a Z-lite pad and did some testing but wanted to know if anyone is already doing this in the field. Most quilt manufacturers feature their products on inflatables so I sent a note to EE to see if they had any recommendations but their response was to just treat it like an inflatable. My concern is the bowing affect of the Z pad and not getting a good seal.

The idea is to adjust your straps just enough to keep the quilt sides down and, for me at least, to keep from letting in air everytime I roll over.  It has to get pretty cold before I tighten the straps at all. If you tightened them enough to bow your mat I think you might be compressing your bag to the point of losing loft–a chilling experience!

I’ve done a number of quilt/pad combinations, but none to CCF.   I would consider making slots in the CCF about 3″ in from the edge and running the webbing them. This is what Katabatic accomplishes with their “cord and clip” system.

Depending on how active you are at night you may have to reinforce the slots with tape, but I would go with a “watchful waiting” approach first.

Do report back with a photo or two.

I believe EE’s straps are now elastic, so you can’t adjust them. I don’t like this and prefer the older style that was non-stretch but adjustable, precisely because the elastic are too narrow to fit onto a standard-width Xlite unstretched (thus they have to stretch, thus they crimp in the inflatable pad). I don’t know if you would have this problem with a CCF, though, I’m thinking the foam is rigid enough that it won’t taco horizontally.

If the elastic do bend the CCF then you either could ask EE to make you a set of the old non-stretch adjustables or you could DIY a way to fix mating clips directly to the CCF.

@greg23: Mulling over the notch idea for the elastic  straps. That would certainly also dial in the location of the pad in relation to the pad with a measure of consistency.

Axel –  By “slot” I meant a slice through the mat – a linear hole –  that would capture and hold the strap in place.

I envision a “notch” in the edge of the matt as something “open” on one side.

Nonetheless, you’re working a with new idea.  And that’s the point.

“Go boldly where ….. “, or some such.
