I’m 5’6″ and was as getting ready to order an EE enigma short (72″) as this would seem to give me plenty of coverage but the description says “up to 5’6” for the short which leaves me a little unsure.

Does anyone my size have any experience with quilts of this size? Would it be better to get the next size up?

I have 3 EE quilts in size “short”, and am just under 5’6″.

All 3 of them are very consistent lengthwise, although they offer different footbox designs: a Revelation X circa 2013, an Enigma of the 2014 vintage, and the 3rd one is a brand new synthetic Prodigy (not yet used in the field).

All fit me very well, with a bit of length to spare – somewhere around 2-3″ get nicely tucked around my neck up to my ears if my campsite happens to be really drafty.

I spend 80% of my sleep time on my side(s), and the other 20% – on my back, fully stretched. Or so I’m told. Stomach sleepers may need a bit of extra quilt length, but if you are one – you will be just fine given your 5’6″ frame.

I have come to realize that when I sleep in a hammock (perhaps 1/3 of my outings), these quilts are actually unnecessarily long, due to my diagonal lay – I use asym. hammocks.

I have no doubts that “short” is the right length for you. Be careful with the width though – base your decision on your intended use, circumference, and sleep habits. Fortunately, EE offers a very decent spread of widths.

Thanks Ivok that’s very helpful. I usually start sleeping on my back, then sides then usually my stomach when in a sleeping bag. I just started with a hammock so I won’t be sleeping on my stomach in it but I’d like to be able to use the quilt if I do decide to bring my tent along.

I purchased my Enigma a few years back. I think sizing was a bit different then but recall that I was at the upper end of the range for a regular length. After talking with Tim I decided to size up (+1oz, I think) so that I could get a bit more coverage. I got the regular length for my wife…it’s adequate for me but I’m glad that I sized up–this allows me to pull the top up above my chin without feeling like my feet are pressing uncomfortably against the bottom. Call or email Tim at EE and he can probably help guide your decision better than anyone.

Im 5’6/7 ….

i went with an regular … The extra weight is minimal and its more useful when you open it up as a blanket

Also if its below freezing it allows you to keep some clothes in the boot of the quilt

and although BPLers will shout me down for this, if its really cold it allows you to pull the quilt over yr head if you MUST get through the night

Note that i have the older karo baffled revelation with 750 fill

It was hinted at above, and you might want to confirm with Tim at EE, but he changed the sizing on Enigma quilt’s some time ago.  What is now sold as short was originally sold as a regular.  At the time Tim said 5’10” max but not much room to push it beyond that.  Later he said they got evidence of stress in the foot box and decided to shift the sizing.  With that info, I really doubt you would have much problem with a short enigma.

Thanks for pointing that out. I’m not sure when the sizing changed. a 72″ is currently the short. I talked to EE and they think the short will be fine as long as I don’t expect to be able to pull it up to my head.

I may just get the regular and if I don’t like the size return it for a short. Worse case I’m out the 4-6 weeks I had to wait for it. the 1 ounce difference really isn’t a big deal for me and hopefully the bulk of a short vs a regular isn’t either.

If you were getting the Revelation I would say definitely size up, having the flexibility to unzip it and use it as a flat blanket it could be useful to have the “extra” bit of length. But for the sewn-footbox Enigma if the regular is too long it really would be dead weight extra space IMO.

I’m 5’8″ and talked to TIm, they made  a bag for me that is between a short and a regular — he basically started with a regular and shortened it by one baffle. The sizing is great for me, if I stick my feet firm down in the footbox I can pull the quilt almost over my head, not that I would sleep that way but it gives me just about the right amount of “snuggle room” or whatever you want to call it, without wasted space. The footbox on the unmodified size regular would have been too much. I don’t know if Tim would still customize like he did mine.

I’m 5’6″ and have a reg length revelation (2014). It’s too much quilt for me. Not the end of the world, keeps me warm, but I’d prefer a snugger fit. Next time I’m going to get a short. I feel this way both in my hammock and on the ground. (I don’t do winter)

I think my biggest concern is that my feet will need to be flat up against the foot box in order to get good coverage up to about my chin. I sleep on my stomach half the time so not sure if short will still be enough.

Since you sleep on your stomach you should size up to Reg length. Belly sleeping uses more length than other styles. The extra length helps seal over your head and shoulders better.

Thanks Tim.  are the measurements on your site taken from outside of the quilt or they measured from the inside?

Measurements are the same in and out. Measurements are taken with footbox open, quilt laid flat and pupped to full length/width

So in the case of the enigma this would be before the foot box is sewn and I should anticipate it being 1.5″ shorter (40 Deg) due to the baffling\loft?

No, it just means that with draw cord footbox quilts measuring it with the footbox closed will give a different result. I forgot you were looking at an Enigma, sorry

the seam allowance used for the Enigma footbox and Revelation draw cord are the same so the finished lengths are the same, when the Revelation is flat.  The Enigma may have a bit more usable closed footbox length for a stated size but it’s not significant in use

Thanks for clarifying this Tim.
