Been using Brooks-Range 20 last 5 years. When warm I’ll unzip and use as blanket. Problem is it’s not very warm with I need it fully zipped. And it’s confining. I’m a stomach sleeper who likes to spread out. 6′ 170.

Looking at quilts — KataB, EE, FF, and REI. Doing all the spec comparisons, reading mostly glowing reviews on all 4, but here’s where I get stuck. Do I go with a long? EE, FF, REI are 78, EE is a very generous 84. Anyone like me with similar experience who is using one of these beauties? Anyone who owns all 4 and has a preference?

I recently went through a long process of research, reading reviews, studying specs, making spreadsheets, etc., and ended up with a Nunatak quilt. A thing of beauty.

Length – I am 5-10 and got mine at 74″ (a custom length for which they did not charge extra). Perfection. So I’d guess 78 should be good for you.

Thanks Paul for directing me to Nunatak. I dropped the REI Magma for at least a 20 degree bag.

Do you find that you can’t open and lay flat the footbox restrictive?

It’s easy enough to mock up a gathered end quilt with a bed sheet and safety pins.  It won’t lay quite like a quilt, but will give you a rough idea how the lengths fit.

I have an older EE Revelation 20, long/wide. You will find that the foot box is not compensated for with the length. I am 5’9 but I also like my head covered (except my face.) I sort’a wish it was an inch or two longer when it is down around 20F. The width is fine, since i can use my jacket for 15-25F with no drafts after a partial roll either side to tuck it in. If I was 6′ I would want the extra length of the xlong/90″.

I have an EE Revelation and like it. I’ll soon be passing it on to my son and getting a Nunatak.

The other brand I’ve looked at is UGQ, which might be of interest to you because their footbox options. Much as I like being able to fully open my Rev, the cinched footbox doesn’t seem as comfortable as a better-shaped one would be. UGQ has an option for a no-taper footbox, which would give folks like us a bit more room to sprawl (albeit for more weight and less thermal efficiency).

Appreciate the feedback. Lots of options to consider: length, width, footbox — closed or zipper/cinch style, and of course temp rating. I’ll look at the UGQ specs but as this moment Katabatic and Nunatuck look good. Holiday specials may make the difference but will need to decide on specs first then just do it.

Unsolicited derail: I use a 20° quilt with a sewn footbox (HG, I love it) and pull my feet out if I’m too warm. It’s not a problem and I appreciate not having the extra weight or air leak of a openable footbox.

I do have a very light apex summer quilt that just has a couple snaps but that’s for like 50-60°+ weather.

Vertical or horizontal baffles? UGQ, Nunatak, EE vertical with horizontal footbox; Katabatic, FF all horizontal.

Did discover UGQ and Western Mountaineering. UGQ has lots of options for customization and pricing seems lower than all others for same specs. Western’s website is too confusing so they’re out.

IMO the footbox; cinched or sewn, will a tough choice. So far sewn is favored.

My beloved HG has horizontal baffles all the way down. They aren’t a problem but I do shake the quilt each day when I unpack to move the down to the center while fluffing.

Vertical baffles seem like a better idea to me.

I talk about horizontal vs vertical baffles (along with other issues that may inform your decision) in my Q&A video about quilts:
