Anybody with experience care to comment?

  • Are they really waterproof for storing quilts/clothes in the bottom of your bag?
  • Any better than plain old dry bags?
  • One better than the other? Or, better options out there?
  • General thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Richard – I can’t speak to the Zpacks product but I’m a big fan of the HMG pods.  Just visually comparing, the pods would seem to have a better fit for most packs, which would probably result in fewer air voids.  Although the zippers are waterproof, the pods will definitely release air when compressed,  i.e., bear can on top, so this tells me they are highly water resistant as opposed to entirely waterproof. Inside a reasonably water resistant pack my equipment has been completely dry.

I will also tell you that absent waterproof zippers, Six Moon Designs makes a taped silnylon “pack pod” that works exceptionally well for a fraction of the price @ 3 for $35. Good luck!

I’ve tried a bunch of pods, and my favorite are from HMG – but very pricy in DCF. Close second are Six Moon Designs Pack Pods in sil-something and a fraction of the cost.

Both have zippers on one edge that open much like a flap, so you can lay it down flat, zip it open, easily see everything inside, and fill it to the brim without stuff falling out.

I also like that these pods match the cross-section of my pack. With pods, the inside of my pack resembles a layer cake more than a random assortment of gear. I’m not a neat freak (as many will attest), but staying organized and packing easier helps. Might want to check your pack dimensions before purchasing.

The HMG pods are the most water resistant, but not waterproof. When rain or stream crossings threaten, my sleeping bag goes into a waterproof turkey roasting bag, never a pod. Works great.
