My GF and I are taking a trip to Hawaii next week and want to do some backpacking in the Hawaii wilderness. The only problem is I am worried about a work issue and I need to have cell reception.

The AT&T map basically shows almost ALL the Hawaii islands as having cell reception? Is this true?

I don’t mind hiking an hour out of my way to find the last area with cell service.

I just don’t want to be stuck in the wilderness 8 hours away from being able to solve an emergency.

oxymoron… if you have internet/cell reception you are NOT in the wilderness…

When I did the Z-trail (Kona) it became very spotty and there wasn’t any reception camping on Waimanu, … which was the point.  It was a slightly steep climb to get reception.  This area was about as remote as it gets  (state forestry land btw, not what the mainland would call “wilderness”), but there’s plenty of businesses and residences scattered throughout the island(s), so there’s an incentive to provide coverage.

Just take plenty of pics with your smartphone noting the coverage icon.

I live in Hawaii (Oahu) and have never had a problem with cell phone reception while hiking.
Which island are you visiting?

Thanks Matt.

We’re going to Oahu and then Maui … but maybe Kauai.  Looks like we’ll be pretty well off.

I can’t remember if we had phone service in Kauaii on the Kalalau trail or not. It wouldn’t have mattered because there was no way we were getting out of there quickly. The hiking in Hawaii seems to go really slowly. The mud is so slippery.
