Sadly it has been awhile since I have planned a trip and needed to print some maps. In the past I was using CalTopo. I used to be able to create a large 1:24,000 scale map that covered a larger area than the standard 7.5 minute quad and order a print. A few days later I would receive it in the mail. I do not see this option anymore. Either I have forgot how to do it or that functionality is gone.
I put the .pdf files on a thumb drive and take it to my local Staples. They have a self-serve color printer that prints on both sides. I usually print 11″ x 17″. About a buck a side if I remember.
I recall an earlier post mentioning that 11 x 17 pdfs are an option you have to pay for now.
I’ve recently been able to print 8.5 x 11
My Caltopo drill is:
*mark up my route, likely campsites, junctions where I need to pay attention.
* create as many 8.5″ x 11″ pdfs as needed at 1: 24,000 scale.
*upload them to FedEx office, order: double-sided, color, glossy
*email the pdfs to my husband, w/other details, so he knows my route and could share w/SAR in the unlikely event
*pick them up at my convenient local FedEx Office. And l use those nice paper cutters while I’m there to trim of the extra white margin so they fit nicely in a 1 gallon ziploc
*Fold current map in quarters and keep in my hip belt pocket — facilitates frequent checking
*Also carry a larger-scale map for overview, up-to-date info/services, mileage info, peaks for bearing readings, lost-map back-up and bedtime browsing.
One nice thing about the 8.5″ x 11 is I was once able to give one away to a guy coming in the other direction who didn’t have a map. I overlap them a little and as I was helping him figure out where he wanted to get to, realized I was already on the next map and done w/the one I was showing him.
I have used created the 11 x 17 pdfs and had them printed off at staples and different office supply stores but I really don’t like them. In the past I was able to create 24 x 36 maps using CalTopo and they actually had options for maps larger than that. I would create my maps and submit it online and they would be mailed to me. I love using the 24 x 36 maps cause they cover a big area, especially on longer trips. I don’t have to keep digging out new maps every 4 or 5 miles.

That was it! I was using mytopo.com. Not sure why I thought it was CalTopo. I think there used to be a link to MyTopo from Hillmap or CalTopo but I don’t see it now.
