Prevent snow from clogging velcro

Hello,

I am using the OR crocodile in the wet PNW snow. On a single day trip, it works great. But on overnight, snow sticks to the velcro closure and makes it impossible to close at the bottom. They get super bulky with snow and won’t close that well in the morning. Even if I manage to get the closed,  they just flay open and essentially funnel the snow into my boots. I’ve tried by best to brush off any snow stuck in the velcro the night before, but it sticks to the loop section pretty badly. I’ve been thinking about putting a snap onto the velcro flap at the bottom so it should theoretically stay closed, but I wonder if that too will freeze up or interfere with the gaiter in some fashion.

Has anyone had this problem? If so, how did you fix it?

Thanks.

The snap is a feature on some older models, it works and does not freeze in my experience in MN. Other models have a second Velcro flap over the top for this purpose which is the only parts I have issue with snow in Velcro! On the main Velcro I have never had any issues since adjusting my technique. I apply as normal initially, then “massage” the Velcro together for maximum stick, lastly, I do not undo the lower section unless absolutely necessary, my gaiters remain on my boots, simply folded over at the top for taking my boots off. This keeps most of the loop side covered and can’t get snow accumulation, especially on the more important lower. Notably, I’ve had more issues closing more worn out pairs, and replaced the Velcro on some to improve performance.

Has anyone tried silicone spray on Velcro? I have heard that folk use it on ski climbing skins to stop snow from sticking.

I have used Chris’ idea of silicone spray on my Velcro for my Tarptent Moment DW at the bottom of the door/zipper. It seemed to work better than no silicone. BUT… it does make opening the Velcro easier as well, so there’s that.
