I was interviewed on a podcast with Charley Pankey, who covers the Sierra Nevada with care and joy. If you’d like to hear my conversation with Charley—talking about backpacking, volunteering, and generally enjoying the Sierra–the links are here:

I’ll give it a watch on YouTube. I want to try my first trip in the Sierras next year. Maybe solo.

Good chat! Last year I went over “don’t be a smart pass” down to Roosevelt and then traversed around the 10k contour line to lower McCabe (it truly is a skyline view of the entire park!), and I also just went through zone 39 on my way to Cracked Crag and eventually half moon and then the ridge line between Dicks Peak and Jacks Peak (finally, it had been on my bucket list for years!). I agree that both northern Yosemite and Desolation are such amazing locations and you can find some hidden gems by going slightly off trail. Now I need to get to Emigrant Wilderness! I’ve got some routes mapped out I would like to try.

    Thanks for posting the interview.

Cool, Charlie.  Great that you’re getting out into these wonderful places! Hope to meet you on the trail.
