I recently bought a QuickDraw filter because it seemed to have impressive engineering. It advertises up to 3 L/min of filtration which is expected to be generous. I filtered some fairly high quality lake water once and it filtered around 1 L / 10 mins. I backflushed it in the field with around 5 L of filtdted water with no improvement. Has anyone else experienced this? Did I just get a defective filter?

Just to clarify, this was the first time I used it outside of a faucet.

Hmm after using the QuickDraw in 10 degree weather in Utah I am very impressed with it. It out performed a befree in those temps and never slowed for me. Are you squeezing the dirty bag?  This is not meant to be a gravity filter. I cannot imagine how you have that slow of a filter rate. I would filter just under 1 liter at a time and it would fill my bottle in what seemed like 20 seconds.

Definitely sounds like you got a dud. They are sometimes one-offs and sometimes part of small production runs where they are all duds. So don’t be surprised if you replace with a new one from the same store around the same time that the new one is a dud as well.

I would call/write Platypus with your situation,  and I bet they will ask you to sent the filter back to them, with a new one in return.

So you were right. Platypus has admitted that they had quality control issues with flow rate. They never contacted me, and I only found out from various forums I visited.

This is in stark contrast to Patagonia that recalled their sun protective clothing with an email even though I didn’t buy directly from them. Really disappointed with Cascade Designs.

From the Platypus website in one of the customer review:

HI Matthew, It has come to our attention that certain Platypus QuickDraw Microfilters were not meeting our advertised flow rate. After a thorough investigation, we found that certain units had a very slow flow rate (0.5L vs 2.5+L/minute) that is below what we deem acceptable. It is important to note that these low flow rate filters do meet all of our efficacy claims and are safe to use.
We apologize for the trouble with your filter and will be reaching out to you directly. – The Platypus Customer Service Team

So if you’ve got a slow one, it may very well be a dud. Hopefully Platypus will at least replace if you contact them.

@ Adam.

There is a material difference between Patagonia and Cascade cases. The Patagonia clothing all fell short of the specified and advertised UPF goal of 50.

Cascade appears to be having what quality control folks call escapes. There might be 1 in a 1000 or .1 in 1000 that are falling short of the specified failure rate. So they are doing what is called “fix on failure.”

It also may have been dry. Dried filters after use sometimes mimic clogs. Soak in water for 24hr or so and the flow will return to like new if it was simply dry.
