Platypus in an Arc Blast

I’ve got a lot of new gear that I haven’t quite dialed in yet. I have an Arc Blast backpack with extra top side pockets. I like to drink out of platypus bags.

The usual drinking tubes on platypus are connected to the top of the bag with a right-angled joint right at where the top screws on. If you put the bag head-down the drinking tube isn’t crushed and you can drink easily.

In my old pack, I sewed an extension on to one of the side pockets so that I could put the bag in a side pocket head-down and it would be held in and not fall out of the pocket. Now I don’t have that. I also have been given a newer Sawyer Squeeze mini that screws right into the platypus. Now there’s no right-angle joint so the drinking tube will be crushed and the flow cut off if I do like normal and shove it head-down into a side pocket. How should I solve this? I don’t think I want to sew anything into the strange fabric the Arc Blast is made with. If I put the platypus inside the pack, the roll-top makes for a long strange outlet for the drinking tube. Might be my only option though.

I never do the water bottles in the side pockets because I can never reach them.

Any ideas?

Zpacks’ site says there’s a port for the hose, shown in photos.  It also says there’s an internal hang loop for a bladder.

Does yours not have this?

If it helps, I used a hole puncher to put holes in the bottom corners of my bladders where there’s a flat layer of plastic available.  Then I use plastic clips and to hang it upside down from loops inside my pack.  You could probably adapt that approach to a single hang loop.

I have fashioned a little cover for my hoses so that the bit valve is protected from dirt or outhouse floors when I take my pack off. It is hard to take that off and force it through the ports and then put it back on. I didn’t see the ports anyway, but they don’t allow me to put the bite valve through without taking off the cover.

I like your idea of hang loops though. Maybe I can do something with that and use it on the outside.

So the problem is with the fit between your pack and the 45 degree orientation of the outlet on the Platy Hoser?

Would the new Big Zip Evo solve your problem where the hose comes out of the side, near the top? See the photo here: https://www.platy.com/hydration-systems

The platypus hose system will fit on almost any bottle with the “standard thread”. For example, a SmartWater bottle.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>If you’re using the side pocket, I bet you could attach a plastic clip to one of the lower contact points for the side compression strap. I don’t know if the height would be perfect to clip the bottom of your bladder to, but it would at least keep it from falling out.</p>

I think I’m probably going to just keep the normal platypus drinking tubes on and just sit at creek crossings doing the squeeze. That seems to be the least broken way to do this. I can add some additional shock cording that will hold at least a 1 liter bag in the side pocket well enough.
