Hiked the Pecos wilderness for two days the first week of August this year.  I just wanted to pass this on as the trip was totally planned based on comments from this forum.

We did 26 miles in two days found it absolutely an amazing hike.  A Nice loop with a little bit of overlap for the last/First 2 miles.

We dropped in at the Jacks Creek campground/trailhead (Trail 257).  There really was no one around except for some folks attending their horses. Just put your 20 bucks (?) in the box fill out welcome book. Then off you go. No no ranger stations, no people.

Other than the horses who tear up the trail and leave their poop everywhere the trails are absolutely fantastic. The damage by the horses is pretty much limited to the few miles near the Jack Creek trailhead.

We hiked up the jack Creeks Trail to Pecos Baldy Lake.  There were a few folks around trying to fish lake–– But mostly it was just us and the obligatory greedy chipmunks. We had lunch there and moved out.

The jacks creek trail peters out into the Skyline Trail (251)   — headed over Trail Riders wall.  The  from trail riders wall are stunning and Not to be missed.   We climbed up to 12,000 feet and spent the night  at the junction of skyline Trail(251) And North Azul Trail (264). North Azul Trial was pretty overgrown and there was a note at the trail head saying it would be a pain in the neck.  So we came around to Beattys trail (25)   and follow that all went back down to the Jacks Creek Trail where we had begun.

This is a great 2 day loop if you’re in good shape and don’t mind the altitude gain on day 1.

    Not a lot of people.

    Lots of water

My only complaint is the aforementioned horse tracks/Poop. Other than that the track is perfect but I would do it again.

Didn’t take any pictures–– You have to Google them!

PS We didn’t get out until after dusk and couldn’t find a decent meal anywhere near the trailhead.
