What are they for? They are so loose that only the very lightest objects will stay in them. I would use them for glasses or sunglasses to have them out of the way so they don’t get scratched/broken, but they fall out. Lighter/fluffier things like hat/mittens/socks that will stay in the pockets will be wet if left overnight. I have very few things that are light enough to go in the pockets and don’t absorb moisture, so I am mystified by the purpose of these pockets.

I think they are there mostly for a headlamp, to be used like a lantern
I use the pockets for my glasses, a map, and a headlamp. So far, nothing has fallen out. One time, I took a selfie inside the tent with a 9 oz camera on a timer inside the pocket.
Are you talking about the 1P (with the long ridgeline pocket) or 2P (with the two smaller peak pockets)?
Since you refer to them in plural is sounds like you’re talking about the 2P but we’ve never had anyone report stuff falling out of the 2P pockets. They seem to work well even for heavier items like a phone. The 1P pocket can be loose if it’s a heavier item and your inner tent isn’t pitched as tight as ideal.
Either way, the intent of these pockets is for lighting (headlamps), or alarms (e.g. watch, where the sound could be smothered if it’s on the ground), or fragile items like glasses. The 1P style doesn’t work as well for a phone since they’re heavier, but it does work in the 2P.
Here’s my 1P with a headlamp and a watch:

Terrible photo, but the 2P pockets are closer to the poles so they can handle more weight. Here’s a iPhone 7 in a Otterbox case. It’s quite secure and doesn’t hang open or anything.

Have Hung wet hat, gloves & socks in the 2p also. Seems to work as good a place as any.
