I wanted another option for sun protection.  Getting more worried about UV exposure.  My normal setup will be Shorts and Compression sleeves.  But I wanted to give pants a try.  My research here seems to point towards Patagonia Terrebonne and Outdoor Research Ferrosi.  I was never a fan of the Patagonia label, so I wanted the Ferrosi.  They weren’t in stock so I looked at the Terrebonne joggers and was super impressed by the lightweight fit.  I picked them up.  They are the thinnest pants I ever owned.

Where I backpack in Joshua Tree and the Sierras, the texture of the rock is like low grade sand paper.  Any one have experience backpacking with these?  Do you recommend a but pad or do they handle the rocks better than they appear too?

I was thinking of carrying one of those 1mm thick shipping foam sheets you sometimes get from with Amazon products.  But being lazy I would rather just sit down.

I’m on my second pair of Terrebonne joggers and the material is relatively tough where (IMHO) sitting on rock once in awhile wouldn’t damage them if some care is taken.  Still probably want some sort of sit pad over the long term.  Just took this second pair (bluish grey) through a couple desert hikers and thorns produced a couple minor snags, ..  so indestructible they are not.

Fwiw, my first pair (black) never got a hole, or any real rips.   Just over the years the black color wore and was replaced by a sorta bronze.

I have a question about these. How are the pockets? Will things fall out of them when you sit down,  easily?  Heard mixed reviews about shallow small pockets..

good question dirtbag?  I haven’t tried them on trail yet,  but the back packet has a zip.

Extremely large Phone in the pocket.

Its not that they are small, its that the material is slippery and the shape of the pocket is such that I could see a phone slipping out when sitting down.

My thoughts are that with such a lightweight material, if you have really deep pockets, the phones will wag too much as you walk.  This one doesn’t have that problem, but you might want to secure the phone somehow.

I’m going to venture that if you have a rubbery phone case that might help.

I like the pockets. Only use front pockets for hands . Single rear zip works great. Buy them only on sale.

A lot of shorts are super light material and nobody worries that they’re too thin. I have some MH Trail Sender pants that barely survived a day pruning cycads in the garden. They got some abrasion and blood stains but did not tear.

I have a pair of the shorts, which I think are the same material and I’ve never really worried about them sitting on rocks.    I’m always torn hiking in the Sierras in the summer between pants and shorts due to the sun.

As for other pants they are a little heavier at 8.5oz but the Kuhl Freeflex pants (not joggers) use a slightly tougher material and have zippered front pockets.  Downside is they only sell them on their website, and they never go on sale.  I used them hiking the JMT last year and they worked great.

Used these for years.

yep will last actually much tougher than you think.
And yes!  From someone who has used these for years – small stuff does fall out of th epockets when sitting down with knees higher than hips – e.g. on the ground.  Heavy items likes phones less so, but can. Small stuff – all the time. But never when walking or generally upright. Always everything when lying down. Same as Nike shorts.

I also wear columbia silver ridge cargo’s – these are even more durable but less comfortsble (to me) and similar issues, just not quite as bad

Stull happy with my terrebones though

What Craig said.  More durable than you would think. Pockets are work fine when standing up, but as soon as your knee is level with your hip items in the pocket will slide out. My phone always come out of the pocket if I sit down in a car. Pants dry very quickly.  My favorite hot weather sun protection.
