I believe basically, that the Patagonia Nine Trails shorts, 5 inch length are possibly the BEST shorts I have ever worn. I am lucky that I purchased 2 pairs a few years ago, as now I can no longer find them anywhere.. 5 inch!!! I did cut the inner part out and I love these shorts. Perfect material, perfect length, perfect zippered pockets.. you name it Patagonia nailed it with the Nine Trails. For Hiking, running, walking, swimming, sleeping, working out..with a baselayer underneath them, underwear or commando.. simply the BEST!! So, if anyone understands my feelings for these shorts and knows of a comparable option in 5 inch length.. zippered hand/side pockets.. please let me know so I can stock up. Not interested in anything other then 5 inch.. maybe 4.. but nothing shorter or longer.. and must have awesome zippered pockets that actually hold belongings and not just 1 key or credit card!!

You have my sympathies. I’ve been wearing Patagonia Stand Up Shorts since they used to stand up, plus Baggies, both with 5-inch inseams. From time to time the powers-that-be at Patagucci decide that short shorts are no longer popular, replaced by more fashionable (but far less comfortable) “long” shorts. Yet Colin Fletcher’s Second Law of Thermodynamic Walking has been proven repeatedly in my experience.
Sorry I can’t help you. In general, if you find clothing you like, stock up now. Might not be there tomorrow.

Or buy a sewing machine and hack.
Cheers
Check out this one from Path projects. Haven’t worn their stuff yet so can’t attest to it personally but it fits your criteria.
@Chris K!!! Those I will try. Just ordered 1 pair. Look promising… Thank you very much!!!
Let us know how they work out! I might jump on a pair for running.
Most definitely will. I run a couple miles 4 – 5 days a week.. So they will get some use in that sense..
I’ve run (ultras) in path projects and use them for hiking. I would highly recommend them. The separate inners are bonus because you can wash and dry them separately as well, obviously. The standard material (not the hot weather), I found to be fairly durable. The hot weather stuff is perhaps too light. They make a heavier duty short, but it’s longer.

So true. I got my first pair of 5″ Baggies and 5″ Stand-Up’s in 1983. Thankfully I’ve hoarded something like 5 different pairs of 5″ stand-ups now that Patagonia discontinued them. I don’t do any inseam over 6′ on any short – I don’t wear “man capri’s.”
To the OP, 5″ running shorts with built-in liner are easy. Amazon has dozens under $20. More durable 5″ backpacking shorts (with liner) are harder to find. Most running shorts have a little zippered back pocket at the waist that really isn’t compatible with a pack.
I have yet to find a decent pair of 5″ shorts with good size zippered front pockets that can hold my large iPhone.
I can fit an iPhone XR with a case in the back pocket of the Strider Pro’s. it’s a tight fit but it works.
Veering into running talk but I’ve had great experience with the UD utility belt, for holding the basics – phone, key, maybe a bar, and their water bottle works great in the back pocket as well.
For whoever cares.. The 5″ shorts from Path Project came today. I will check them out when i get home from work this evening.. and wear them all weekend and let you know my initial thoughts about them and how they compare to the Patagonia Nine Trails…
@dirtbag what model did you get? The CREST PX – 5″ is just what I need-5″ no liner with 2 front zippered pockets.
Think the Graves PX 5 inch. Black
So other then Made in China, I do like these shorts and will definitely buy another pair, possibly 2. They fit perfect. Size large, I am 5′ 10, right now weigh 199 lbs and have approximately 17% body fat.. if that helps anyone with sizing. I wear 34 -36 waist depending.. mostly size large, sometimes medium. I have worn them since Friday evening.. today is Momday evening. I have walked about 10 miles in them, ran about 4 miles in them. I have slept in them one night. I have worn them to the gym 3 times. They dont stink .. I dont think!! I have not worn them swimming yet, but would not hesitate to jump in the pool, a lake or the ocean wearing them, i believe they would dry very very quickly. I do love the material, slight stretch and feels soft while also looking clean and nice. No liner which I appreciate. I have worn them with my “Me Undies ” boxer briefs and also with a a pair of Patagonia silkweight base layer bottoms. I would wear them cammando too, just have not yet over 3 days.. other then to sleep in. The pockets are perfect. I can easily fit my galaxy 10 big phone in the side pockets with zippers. The back zip pocket is also fairly large too.. Draw string waste, i wish it was on inside of waist band instead of outside.. no biggie though its minimal and not bad. Time will tell the durability but I think they should last some time and they definitely do not feel or look cheap-ass.. Hope that helps anyone on the fence..
And the 5 inch is perfect!! Definitely allows the quads to pop a bit!
Thanks for the update.
