Overfilling a WM Summerlite

Anyone have any experience with overfilling a Summerlite? I picked one up recently and while I love the lightness of it, I’m concerned with warmth down to its temp rating. From what I’ve been reading its a justifiable concern.

There isn’t a happy medium between the Summerlite and the Megalite in weight. My brand new Summerlight clocks in at 18.66oz and a Megalight is 24oz. I’m hoping to add a couple ounces of fill and push the temp rating into legit 27-30F territory and the bag weight to just under 21oz.

WM will over fill it for you at a very reasonable charge. For me, the Summerlite was pretty close to it’s rating, but the lack of a draft collar was a it’s biggest flaw.

Huh, never even thought about the lack of a draft collar.

Mine is stock.  I’m leaving it that way as it’s truly my summer bag.  Colder temps and I’ll eat the weight and bump up to my 20 degree bag.

That said, two close friends have the Summerlite and added overfill at a later date through WM.  Neither regret it.  In fact, they claim it made the bag far better.

One thing to throw out there that a lot of Summerlite users might forget: the baffles are continuous and you can shift all of the down to the top if needed.

While I have since abandoned my Megalite for quits (because I found myself using it as such 80% of the time), when I used it in bag mode it was always with all of the down shaken into the top. Used this way it is effectively a 20 degree bag.

I’m aware of the ability to shift the down but with the Summerlite being on the slimmer end I’d imagine it would create cold spots as I shift around because the bag would move with me.

@Wisner

Did your friends report it being noticeably warmer? How much overfill added?

Of the 7 WM bags I’ve had since 1992, all have had overfill… I do it as a matter of course when I order them. However, I doubt I’d go to the effort of sending an existing bag in for overfill, especially a summer bag.

Order from Bentgate if you want overfill…

They went with the stock WM overfill which last I checked is 2 oz for $40.  It’s surprising how much of a difference 2 oz. makes when you look at their bags next to mine.  Both say they’re considerably warmer, but I really don’t know how to quantify that.

I’ve slept VERY comfortably at 24 degrees in my stock Summerlite.. Just shifted the down, and put on my Patagonia Ultr Light down sweater on.

Its been 3 years, now, since I’ve used my FF Humingbird.. Just hangs in my closet. waiting for me to pull the trigger and get it sold..
