Overall, impressed with AegisMax sleeping bag from China

Normally, i try to support local as much as i can afford, but since i don’t make a lot, it’s not always very feasible.  So at the risk of sounding like a hypocrite (previous statements on ebay Chinese windshirt thread way back when), i decided to order something from China.

The brand is AegisMax and the sleeping bag seems to be comfort rated to about 46 F*, with 20D nylon fabric, no hood, 15 oz and some change (according to their specs), and supposedly 800 fp, 95% goose down.

Here’s a link to where i ordered it from:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Aegismax-UL-Wing-outdoor-ultralight-mummy-type-white-Goose-down-camping-spring-and-autumn-sleeping-bag/2004977050.html?spm=2114.01020108.3.32.FTGtDQ&ws_ab_test=searchweb201556_1_79_78_77_80_61,searchweb201644_5,searchweb201560_1

Seemed too good to be true at 54 dollars, but the good reviews at various places reassured me somewhat.  So i put in an order on the 1st, payed a little more for DHL shipping, and surprisingly received it today on the 7th. I received it a bit quicker than i did the Ripstop by the Roll order from NC, i think (i live in VA).

First impressions; seems well stitched, YKK zipper, UL design. Not for bigger folks at all though. I think if you’re taller than 5′ 10″ it probably won’t fit you, or if you have a very large build, it won’t fit.  I’m 5′ 7″ with a medium, naturally muscular build, a little extra weight, decent sized shoulders and chest for my size and for not lifting and width wise it’s a little tight, but length wise a couple to few inches to spare..

It does appear to be high quality, high fp down, which is mostly lighter in color.  There are very occasional (a relative few) darker colored feathers/down in there.  No strong smell.

Cons is that it’s sewn through and so not baffled, a bit tight/small, and no draft tube or overlap for the 3/4 length zipper (which also means that it’s not prone to snagging at all though)

I prefer quilts overall, but as i most enjoy winter and cold weather backpacking, i’m looking to supplement my quilts with a sleeping bag, because i feel that in more extreme cold situations, it’s warmer to be wrapped all the way around, even if the down on the bottom gets compressed.  So should allow me or my spouse to take the 0 degree EE quilt or the 25 degree quilt down 20 degrees colder at least.  The fact that it’s sewn through, won’t matter much when it’s used as a supplemental, under insinuative piece.

Originally i was looking to make a quilt with similar specs, but realized that it was cheaper and much more convenient to get this bag, plus the above benefits for more extreme cold weather.  I’ve been working a lot lately and currently don’t have much time for projects (was home sick today though).  Haven’t weighed it officially yet.

Makes me tempted to but a pair of those down pants too…

Hey Justin, any update on this bag after putting it through a few months of use? These things are blowing up over on reddit.com/r/ultralight, and I’m wondering if they’re worth recommending to friends who are looking for budget bags.

my aegis sleeping bag smelled pretty bad after a single use

i suspect the problem was the bag or down might have been contaminated

i sent it back to china for a refund, well see how that works out

the 3F tent on the other hand works fine with a few mods

;)

Mine had a smell, wouldn’t say it was terrible but its gone now. I have used it about 6 nights now, one night it got down to the mid 30’s and I was fine in it.

I used it a few times and overall i’m happy with it.  I bought it more for niche use, extreme cold, to combine with a quilt.

We didn’t have as many extreme cold days as we did the winter before, and I didn’t get to use it as much as i wanted to.

I didn’t notice a smell before, or after using it.

Btw, in my OP, i meant to say it’s not box baffled. As Richard N. has talked about, if you use some kind of layer over a sewn through design, it helps quite a bit. Since i bought it mostly for use with a quilt–the quilt going over the top, i was particularly concerned with the sewn through baffling design.  I also sometimes use a bivy.

No idea.  Speaking generally, a lot of down in China comes from birds that are killed for food and relatively young.  Some comes from farms where they don’t kill them right away for food but they live pluck them for awhile first.

Chances are higher that it comes from the food sourced birds and they pluck it after they kill the bird for food.

While i eat mostly vegetarian and/or vegan most of the time, i don’t mind using Down that comes from birds that are killed for food.  The Chinese are not going to change their food habits anytime soon, and it’s wasteful not to use as much as the animal as one can.

Neither of the above is considered “humanely sourced”, but i only have a problem with live plucking and force feeding, which supposedly is starting to be phased out due to consumer pressure.

Someone on another forum contacted Ageismax, the company that makes them and they told them where the down is sourced and its the same that other bigger names use.

Right! “Aegismax” steals designs and peddles knockoffs on Amazon and Alibaba. (for instance I found a LuxuryLite cot knockoff review video on youtube)

I say if we buy goods from the crooks in China, WE are the problem. (I found this thread because I was researching a complaint on Reddit that feathers were coming out like Trump hair.)

UL gear from cottage companies is one place I can spend money and support US workers. Not many chances to do this anymore. My last job was for an American mfg. and my job existed based entirely on domestic sales. I would rather work a little overtime or save a little longer for another EE quilt. Not judging, just my 2 cents. God knows my gear closet has plenty made in China and other foreign sources. Now that you have it I hope it works out good for you.
