Outdoor Shirts – velcro tab on back panel – why?

I’ve only been wearing nylon/polyester “outdoor” shirts for like 40 years now.  Nearly all the shirts I own that have a back shoulder panel with mesh underneath have a velcro tab connecting the panel to the shirt body.  In warm weather I am not wearing an undershirt so these velcro tabs tend to jab into my back as a pack  (or my kayak seat) press on them.  I am currently un-stitching the velcro on about 8 shirts and will just sew a stitch across that area.  But the question remains:

Do these velcro tabs have any purpose other than to hold the panel to the shirt body?

Thanks   -Ken

Looking at the similar LL Bean Tropicwear shirt, it likely stems from closing up the vents in case the breeze gets too chilly if fishing or beachwalking without a pack.  I’ve seen people use them for travel clothes, even from airport to airport (the angler going through the terminal just wore a threadbare T-shirt)

A rather pointless marketing feature. Quite useless when wearing a pack.

Cheers
