Anyone know if the outdoor research echo sun hoodie can defeat mosquitoes as well as button up shirts ?

I recently purchased one, but obviously have no skeeter tests. The material is very thin. If you’re in an area with lots of mosquitoes, I’d either want it treated with permethrin or something thicker.

The Echo will offer no protection for mosquitos.  You might have luck with permethrin treating it, but the fabric itself will offer no protection.

I have used shirts using material similar to the echo. when facing light mosquito pressure permethrin worked pretty well. At bugforce 6 or above you are going to get bit through the shirt even if treated with permethrin. I have a shirt that was treated which got stained by the number of bugs that bit me through the shirt and a subsequently smashed by my hiking partner.

Thanks.  Perhaps I’ll stick to my button up shirt.

I have several OR Echo shirts. The fabric is not just thin but has a waffle-like pattern that actually leaves a grid of tiny holes (not tiny for skeeters). So as noted, by itself the fabric offers no mosquito protection. But treated with permethrin it works fairly well.

I’ve used the Echo treated with permethrin with success. It’s not a 100% but has worked for me even during peak bug season crossing boggy meadows in the Sierra. It’s biggest advantage vs something like a thicker windshirt layered over a shirt (that provides more of a physical barrier) is that it is cooler. I usually treat it right before I expect the bugs to hit (e.g. late June or July) so I have a fresh coat.

I have talked with OR about this and I think the Hoody in white treated with Permethrin would be the best all around shirt for sun and bugs and it works pretty well combined with an Echo T when it is a bit chillier.

I have also used thin sun hoodys-Patagonia Tropic, Capilene Cool Daily and treated with Sawyer permethrin in the Sierra with moderate mosquito pressure I didn’t get bit once through the shirt. Note the treatment was fresh-a few days old. I also treated hat, shorts, pack, socks and used picardin spray on exposed legs.
